9 Pots of Gold Megaways Overview

9 Pots of Gold Megaways is the Megaways sequel to one of the best-known Irish-luck slots, built by Gameburger Studios and released through Microgaming on 4 April 2023. It keeps the leprechaun, the rainbow and the Epic Strike scatter prizes of the original, and moves them onto a dynamic grid with up to 117,649 ways. The RTP is 96.1%, the volatility is high, and SlotCatalog lists a hit frequency of 34.89% and a 5,000x maximum win.

The Grid and the Ways

The reels change height on every spin, and the counter above the grid shows the current number of ways – 1,680 on one of our spins, 2,160 on another. Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, only the highest win is paid per way, and winning symbols are cleared by rolling reels so new ones can drop in.

Symbols and Payouts

The paytable in the game’s help screen was read at a €0.20 bet, so the values below are easy to turn into multipliers. All symbols pay for 3 to 6 of a kind:

  • Golden 7s – €1.00 for six (5x the bet), down to €0.10 for three.
  • Harp – €0.50 for six (2.5x).
  • Leprechaun hat – €0.40 (2x); four-leaf clover – €0.32 (1.6x).
  • A and K – €0.24 (1.2x); Q, J and 10 – €0.20 (1x).

Epic Strike Prizes

The ladder on the left of the reels is the heart of the game. Landing 3 or more Epic Strike scatters anywhere pays an instant prize, and at a €0.20 bet the ladder reads:

  • 3 scatters – €0.20 (1x) · 4 – €1.00 (5x) · 5 – €3.00 (15x)
  • 6 – €8.00 (40x) · 7 – €20.00 (100x)
  • 8 – €100.00 (500x) · 9 – €400.00 (2,000x)

Our first screenshot shows how the base game feels most of the time: a rainbow sweeps over the reels and a small €1.40 win (7x) lands on a 1,680-way spin.

Win Booster

The Win Booster button next to the reels doubles the stake – €0.20 becomes €0.40 – and the game spells out what you get for it: “Minimum ways increased 4096+” and “Boosted chance to trigger free spins”. The Epic Strike ladder doubles with the stake (€800 for nine scatters at €0.40), so the prizes stay the same multiples of the base bet. SlotCatalog also lists a 96.5% RTP figure alongside the base 96.1%.

Free Spins

Spelling out G-O-L-D with the scatters opens 10 free spins, and the intro screen promises that the round can “win over 10 000X”. Two things build up during the feature:

  • The ways-win multiplier in the top corner grows as the round goes on – we saw it move from X1 to X3 and then X4.
  • A retrigger trail collects coins in the panel on the left; filling it awards +4 free spins.

In our round the multiplier stood at X4 with 7 of 10 spins played, and a single cascade then paid a Big Win of €5.12 – 25.6x the €0.20 bet.

Feature Buy

The Feature Buy panel shows the prices at the current stake. At €0.20:

  • 10 free spins – €10.00 (50x)
  • 15 free spins – €14.00 (70x)
  • 20 free spins – locked at this stake, with the message “reduce bet to enable”.

The panel also shows the Win Booster toggle and a 64+ Megaways note, and your current bet level applies to every purchased spin.

Maximum Win

SlotCatalog lists the maximum win as 5,000x, while the in-game free spins screen advertises wins of over 10,000x. The Epic Strike ladder on its own tops out at 2,000x for nine scatters.

Theme and Presentation

The setting is pure Irish luck: a green clover background, a leprechaun who dances on both sides of the screen when a big win lands, a rainbow that arcs over the reels and showers of gold coins on every win. During free spins the background darkens to a deep purple, and the collected GOLD letters sit in a panel above the Epic Strike ladder.

How It Compares to the Original

The original 9 Pots of Gold plays on a fixed grid, and its appeal is the same scatter ladder you see here. The Megaways version keeps that ladder, adds rolling reels and a growing multiplier to the free spins, and gives the base game a chance of a much larger grid on every spin. The trade-off is volatility: with the ways count changing constantly, quiet stretches and sudden bursts both become more likely.

Who It Is For

9 Pots of Gold Megaways suits players who liked the original’s instant scatter prizes and want more movement on the reels. The Epic Strike ladder gives every spin a visible target, and the growing free spins multiplier is where the larger wins come from.
