Happy Neko Overview

Happy Neko is a cluster pays slot from Spadegaming on an 8x8 grid, released on 16 October 2024. It has an RTP of 96.85%, a medium volatility rating and a maximum win of 5,000x per spin. Stakes run from 0.20 to 500.

The game adds one idea to the usual cluster-and-cascade formula: winning symbols can merge into a single big symbol instead of disappearing. That merge, and a free spins round played on a much larger grid, are what set it apart.

A Beckoning Cat and a Wall of Daruma

A smiling calico maneki-neko sits above the reels in front of a red torii gate and cherry blossoms, holding a purple lucky mallet in one paw. The grid below is filled with round daruma-style cat figures in four colours, plus four stylised glyphs that take the place of card symbols.

The spin button is a festival drum, the buy button is a wooden prayer plaque with a rope knot, and the free spins intro rains gold oval coins over a pink sky. The Japanese theme runs through every part of the interface, not only the reels.

How the Clusters Pay

Wins need five or more matching symbols joined horizontally or vertically. The rules illustrate this with a set of grid diagrams: straight lines, L-shapes and blocks all count, but a symbol touching the group only at a corner does not. Only the highest win per symbol group is paid, and separate clusters are added together.

Winning clusters clear from the grid and new symbols drop in, so one spin can pay several times in a row.

The Paytable

The paytable pays in six bands by cluster size – 5–6, 7–9, 10–14, 15–19, 20–29 and 30+. The amounts below are the values the demo showed; checking them against our €40 spins shows they are quoted for a €20 stake.

Gold cat – 10 / 25 / 60 / 125 / 250 / 500. Red cat – 8 / 15 / 35 / 75 / 125 / 400. Green cat – 5 / 10 / 25 / 50 / 90 / 250. Blue cat – 3 / 5 / 20 / 40 / 60 / 250.

The two gold and red glyphs pay 2 / 4 / 8 / 15 / 40 / 150, and the two lowest glyphs, the teal one and the green one, pay 1 / 2 / 4 / 8 / 15 / 75.

At the €20 stake a cluster of 30 or more gold cats pays 25x, and the smallest winning cluster of the lowest glyph pays 0.05x. The steep climb between those two ends makes cluster size matter more than symbol choice: a 15-symbol blue cat cluster pays eight times as much as a 7-symbol one.

Match and Merge

The feature named on the game banner is simple to describe: winning symbols merge into 1 big symbol. Instead of every symbol in a win disappearing, part of the cluster fuses into one oversized version of the same symbol, and that big symbol stays on the grid for the next cascade.

We saw it twice in the base game. A red cat cluster left behind a 2x2 red cat as a €36 win resolved, and a gold cat win produced a 2x2 gold cat on its way to €52. A big symbol counts as several positions at once, so it gives the next cascade a head start towards another cluster of the same kind.

The game lists mega symbols up to 3x3. Our captures showed 2x2 versions only.

Scatters and the Buy Option

The scatter is a golden mallet stamped with a cat’s paw. In our session five scatters across the grid awarded 10 free spins.

The Buy Free Spins plaque beside the win meter goes straight to the round. The rules put the price at 75x the total bet, and the demo agreed: 1,500.00 at the €20 stake.

Free Spins on a Bigger Grid

The free spins round changes the board completely. The grid grows from 8x8 to 12 columns and 12 rows – 144 positions instead of 64 – and a Bonus Multiplier meter appears above it.

The meter has four targets, each with its own multiplier: 4 → x2, 7 → x3, 12 → x5 and 20 → x10. A marker moves along the bar as the round progresses; in our capture it stood at 9, past the x3 step. The screens we captured do not say what fills the meter.

One spin in our round built a 2x2 green cat and a column of K glyphs for €27, and with six spins still to play the round had already collected €197 – nearly 10x the stake.

Who Should Play It

Happy Neko suits players who like cluster games and want something that behaves a little differently from a plain cascade. The merge mechanic keeps part of each win on the grid, and the free spins round is far bigger than the base game.

The reservations are a thin bottom half of the paytable, where small clusters of the glyphs return fractions of the stake, and a 75x buy price that is on the high side for a medium volatility game.
