Joker Lanterns Hold and Win Overview

Joker Lanterns Hold and Win is the third game in Kalamba Games’ Joker Lanterns series, released on 5 October 2023. It keeps the Halloween twist of the originals – classic fruit machine symbols mixed with grinning jack-o’-lanterns in jester hats – and adds a Hold and Win bonus with four fixed cashpots. The grid is 6x4 with 40 paylines. Kalamba’s own game sheet rates the volatility at 9 out of 10, gives a hit frequency of 19.86% and a maximum win of 10,500x the bet; the RTP is 96.67%, and the game is available in several RTP versions. Stakes run from 0.50 to 75.

The Series

The original Joker Lanterns came out in 2020 on the same 6x4, 40-line grid, with a 10/10 volatility rating and a 15,672x ceiling. Joker Lanterns Hit’n’Roll followed in 2022 with a bonus wheel and a 50,000x top prize. The Hold and Win edition is the tamest of the three on paper – 9/10 volatility and 10,500x – but it is also the only one with fixed cashpots and a full-grid prize.

Symbols

The reels mix the full fruit machine set – red sevens, single and double BARs, bells, green four-leaf clovers, watermelons, plums, grapes and cherries – with the jester pumpkin, which is the game’s wild. Four Fixed Cashpots

Four plaques sit above the reels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Their values move with the stake, and our screenshots show the same ratio at two different bets. So the cashpots are fixed multiples of the bet, not progressive jackpots.

Hold and Win

The Hold and Win round starts with a clear rules screen: 3 Hold and Win spins are awarded, and “whenever a Hold and Win locks in place the number of remaining Hold and Win spins is reset to 3”. The second rule is the one to aim for: “Lock all positions to win full-grid prize”.

The round plays on a green version of the grid, where every landed orange token locks in place. Our round at an 87.50 stake ended with SPINS LEFT: 0 and 20 of the 24 positions filled – four short of the full-grid prize – and a total of 217.00, about 2.5x the bet.

How the Reset Rule Plays Out

The reset rule is what makes a Hold and Win round long or short. Every time at least one new token locks, the counter goes back to 3, so the round only ends after three consecutive empty spins. A board that fills steadily can run for many spins; a board that stalls ends after three. Our round reached 20 locked positions before the three empty spins came, which shows how far a single trigger can travel, and also how the last four positions – the ones standing between a normal result and the full-grid prize – are the hardest to fill.

Free Spins With x10 Wilds

The free spins award screen spells out the two ideas behind the feature: “Multiplier wilds!” on the left, with three x10 jester pumpkins, and “Win extra free spins!” on the right, with three gold stars. The stars fill a meter on the right of the reels; a full meter adds +3 spins.

Our round was 10 free spins with x10 wilds, and the running total is easy to follow in the screenshots:

Buy Bonus: Four Options

The Buy Bonus screen offers four ways into a feature. At a 35.00 stake the prices were:

• 3 Hold and Win spins – “win cashpots more often”: 1,750 – 50x
• 3 Hold and Win spins: 1,120 – 32x
• 10 free spins with x10 multiplier wilds: 3,157 – about 90x
• 8 free spins with x5 multiplier wilds: 1,337 – about 38x

The free spins round above was the 3,157 option. At spin 7 it had returned 2,880.50, just over 91% of its price, with three spins left to play.

Choosing a Buy Option

The four buy prices tell you how Kalamba values the features. The cheapest route into the bonus is the plain Hold and Win at 32x, and paying 50x for the enhanced version buys a better chance at the cashpots. For free spins, the x10 version costs roughly 2.4 times as much as the x5 version and adds two more spins, so most of the price difference is the size of the wild multiplier. None of the options is a guaranteed profit – our x10 round was still just below its price with three spins to go.

The Numbers in Context

A 19.86% hit frequency means about one paying spin in five, which is low for a 40-line game and fits the 9/10 volatility rating. The 10,500x ceiling is just over twice the Platinum cashpot, so the biggest results need a combination – a full or near-full Hold and Win board plus a cashpot, or a free spins round where x10 wilds line up. At the 75.00 maximum stake, the top prize is worth 787,500.

At an 87.50 stake, one base-game spin with two jester pumpkins on the upper reels paid 245.00 – 2.8x. A “Big Win” list on the left side of the screen showed recent top results of x5,575, x5,087 and x5,016, so wins over 5,000x are more than theoretical.

After a feature you can gamble the result on a wheel. After the Hold and Win round the screen offered to collect 217.00 or gamble it to 434.00 on an x2 wheel, with three diamond steps showing how many times the gamble can be repeated.

The base game sits on a dark purple background with pumpkin silhouettes, and the Hold and Win round switches to green. The fruit symbols are glossy and bright, the pumpkins wear red-and-blue jester caps, and wins are counted up in large gold numbers across the grid.
