Secrets of Anubis Overview

Secrets of Anubis is an Egyptian-themed video slot from the Asian studio Spadegaming, released on 20 May 2024. It is built for the phone first: the game runs in a tall portrait frame, with six reels at the top and large touch controls underneath.

The grid is a Megaways-style layout. Each of the six reels shows between two and seven symbols per spin, and the symbols stretch to fill the space, so the number of ways to win changes all the time. The rules state a maximum of 117,649 ways; in our screenshots the counter above the reels read anything from 216 to 3,600 ways in the base game.

Design and Symbols

The reels sit in a stone frame between two sandy temple walls, with pyramids in the distance and the golden title above. Each symbol has its own coloured tile – orange, green, pink, purple, blue or sandy brown – so tall symbols read as solid coloured blocks, and it is easy to follow a win across the grid.

The highest-paying symbol is the golden scarab. Behind it come the Eye of Horus and the winged ankh, then the lotus flower, the crook and flail and the feather. The five low symbols are the card values A, K, Q, J and 10. The special symbols are the golden pharaoh mask scatter, the Anubis Wild and a blue Bonus gem.

Paytable

The in-game paytable lists wins for three to six matching symbols. The scarab pays 12.50 for six and 2.50 for three of a kind, while the Eye of Horus and the ankh pay 7.50 for six. The lotus, the crook and flail and the feather pay 6.25, and every card symbol pays 2.50 for six and 0.50 for three.

So a full line of scarabs is worth five times as much as a full line of card symbols. As in all ways games, each way is paid on its own, and a tall scarab block across several reels can add up quickly.

Ways to Win

A win needs at least three matching symbols on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel. Only the highest win is paid on each way, and the wins from all ways are added together; scatters are the only symbols that pay outside this rule. The more rows each reel shows, the more ways there are – our 3,600-ways spin had small symbols on every reel, while a spin with big stacked blocks dropped to a few hundred.

Avalanche Wins

Secrets of Anubis uses an Avalanche (cascade) mechanic. After a win, the winning symbols crumble away and new symbols fall into the gaps. If they form another win, the process repeats, so one paid spin can turn into a chain of wins. One of our screenshots catches the moment when the reels break apart in a cloud of sand, with only a single scatter left standing on the sixth reel.

Scatters and Free Spins

The pharaoh mask is the scatter. It lands as a tall golden block that can cover most of a reel, and enough of them start the free spins. In our session, the feature opened with a 25 Free Spins Won screen.

The free spins look different. Anubis himself appears above the reels holding his staff, flames burn at the sides, and the counter shows how many spins are left. The Anubis Wild now appears on the reels and substitutes for the regular symbols.
