Wolf Fang - The Origins Overview

Wolf Fang - The Origins is a Spinomenal slot released on 20 July 2023, part of the studio's long-running Wolf Fang series. This one takes the wolf back to the Stone Age: it runs on a 5x3 grid with just 5 paylines, and the reels are filled with prehistoric animals. SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 91.5% (the game comes in several RTP versions) and a maximum win of 2,000x the bet. Stakes run from 0.50 to 50 per spin.

A Prehistoric Bestiary

The premium symbols are Ice Age creatures: a woolly mammoth, a woolly rhino, a sabre-toothed cat and a dodo. The low symbols are A, K, Q, J and 10, carved in stone with small crowns and gems. The grey wolf is the WILD, marked with the word under its portrait, and it substitutes for the animals on the lines.

Five Lines, Line Bet Times Five

The bet is set per line: in our session the per-line stake was 10, for a total bet of 50. With only five lines every win is easy to follow – the game shows the line win separately from the total.

The best base-game example: a wolf wild followed by three dodos along the bottom row paid a WIN PER LINE of 400, which is 40x the line stake and 8x the total bet.

How the Stakes Work

Because the bet is chosen per line, the published 0.50 to 50 range translates into 0.10 to 10 per line. Every line win is shown as a multiple of the line stake, so the same symbol always pays the same share of the total: a line worth 40x the line stake is always worth 8x the total bet, whatever you play. That makes the game easy to calculate in your head, which suits its old-school five-line structure.

The flip side of five lines is that most spins pay nothing. A 243-ways or 20-line slot finds small wins almost every other spin; here a spin needs three matching symbols on one of just five paths, so dry runs are part of the design and the wild becomes far more valuable than in a busier game.

Free Spins: Choose Your Mode

Three FREE SPINS moon scatters start the bonus. In our trigger they landed on reels 1, 2 and 4. The game then asks you to pick a play mode:

  • 20 free spins with 1x2 stacked medium symbols
  • 10 free spins with 1x3 stacked medium symbols

It is the classic volatility choice: twice as many spins with shorter stacks, or half the spins with stacks that cover a full reel. SlotCatalog also lists additional free spins inside the round.

Comparing the Two Modes

The two modes trade length for size. In the long mode the medium symbols arrive as two-high blocks, in the short mode as three-high blocks. On a three-row grid a 1x3 stack fills an entire reel, which lines up with every one of the five paylines at once; a 1x2 stack only reaches the lines that pass through two of the three rows. The shorter round therefore has more potential per spin, while the longer round gives twice as many attempts.

Which one is better depends on taste rather than maths – the game does not publish separate RTP figures for the two modes, and our screenshots do not show a finished round in either of them.

Buying the Feature

The Buy Feature panel triggers the free spins directly. At a 50 bet the price is 1,750 – 35x the total bet – and you still choose the mode after the purchase.

Against the 2,000x maximum win, the 35x price is small: the top prize is about 57 times the cost of the feature. Most bought rounds, of course, end far below that, and a 91.5% RTP version would return less on average than a 96% game.

What Our Spins Showed

  • Big Win 400 (8x): several wolf wilds stacked across the reels.
  • 200 (4x): two wild wolves on neighbouring reels carried a line of mammoths.
  • 100 (2x): two wolves at the top of reels 1 and 2 completed a line of Qs.

Every paying spin in our session involved at least one wolf. With five lines the wild does most of the work, and a single wolf on the right reel is often the difference between a win and nothing.

Graphics and Setting

The reels are framed with vines and stone, and behind them a savannah with flat-topped trees stretches to the horizon. The logo hangs at the top in icy blue letters. The animals are painted in warm browns and oranges, with the moon scatters as the only cold colour on the grid.

More Wolf Fang

The Wolf Fang series has many chapters on our site. Wolf Fang - Supermoon runs on the same five-line engine with the same free spin choice and the same 35x buy, but moves the wolf into a moonlit forest. Wolf Fang - Ice and Fire and Wolf Fang - Apocalypse take the theme in different directions.

Who It Is For

Wolf Fang - The Origins is for players who like a simple five-line slot with one clear decision in the bonus. The line wins are easy to read, the wolf wild carries the base game, and the free spin choice lets you pick between a longer round and bigger stacks. The 91.5% RTP listed on SlotCatalog is on the low side, so check the information panel at your casino for the version you play.
