Book of Zulu Overview

Book of Zulu is a five-reel, three-row book slot from Gamzix with 10 fixed paylines, an RTP of 96.02%, a medium-high volatility rating and a maximum win of 2,500x the bet. It was released on 3 December 2024, and stakes start at 0.10.

The book genre is one of the most crowded in the industry, so the question with any new entry is what it changes. Gamzix changes two things: the free spins pick two expanding symbols instead of one, and an optional side bet guarantees a book on every spin.

An Explorer on the Savanna

Most book slots send the player into an Egyptian tomb. This one moves the formula to southern Africa. The reels sit in a carved wooden frame against a savanna at dusk: a flat-topped acacia tree, monkeys in its branches, and zebras grazing along the bottom of the screen. The free spins switch the palette to a violet evening sky.

The premium symbols are an explorer in a pith helmet, a Zulu shield with crossed spears, a carved green mask and a hand-painted drum. The lower pays are the familiar card ranks A, K, Q, J and 10, done in bright chunky letters.

The book itself is an ornate gold-and-red volume with a tasselled bookmark, and it is the most important symbol on the reels.

The Book Does Two Jobs

As in every game of this type, the Book is both the Wild and the Scatter. On the reels it substitutes for any paying symbol to complete a line. Three or more anywhere in view trigger the free spins.

We saw both jobs in the screenshots. A single book on the second reel sat inside a winning line that paid 280.00, while two books side by side on the second and third reels helped a spin return 340.00. A pair of books on the bottom row later featured in an 800.00 win, and a book on the top row in an 840.00 one.

On a 250.00 stake those are returns of roughly 1.1x to 3.4x – the modest end of what a book slot does in its base game.

The Paytable

The explorer is the top symbol by a clear margin. The paytable lists him at 25,000.00 for five, 2,500.00 for four, 200.00 for three and 100.00 for two.

The shield pays 12,000.00, 1,200.00, 150.00 and 40.00. The mask and the drum share an identical scale: 6,000.00, 600.00, 120.00 and 40.00.

Two things stand out. All four premium symbols pay for just two of a kind, which keeps the reels ticking over. And the jump from four to five is enormous – ten times over for every premium – so almost all of the value in each symbol lives in the five-of-a-kind line.

Across the premiums the explorer's top line is roughly twice the shield's and more than four times the mask's or drum's. The mask and drum being priced identically is unusual – most book slots give every premium its own step – and it means that, of the four, only the explorer and the shield really change the size of a free spins round when they are drawn as the special symbol.

The ten paylines are fixed and drawn out on the rules screens. Alongside the straight rows they include V-shaped and zigzag patterns across the grid.

The Guaranteed Book Option

A panel on the left of the reels offers 1 Book Guaranteed. With it switched on, every spin is dealt at least one book, which makes the free spins easier to reach.

It is not free. With the option on, the stake field read 250.00. During free spins, where the side bet no longer applies, the same field read 100.00. The option therefore appears to raise the cost of each spin to 2.5 times the base stake – a steep premium for one guaranteed symbol, so check the figure in your own game before using it.

Free Spins With Two Expanding Symbols

Three books opened the feature in our session, paying 460.00 on the trigger itself. The game then announced 10 free spins and showed an open book with the line “choice of special expanding symbols for the current mode”.

The trigger itself is presented simply. The reels dim, the books that landed light up in gold on top of them, and the win counter adds the scatter payout before the round begins. In our case the three books were spread over the first, second and fifth reels, so they do not need to sit next to each other to count.

This is where Book of Zulu parts ways with the classic formula. Instead of one special symbol, the book revealed two – in our case the 10 and the K, both shown in a banner above the reels for the rest of the round.

When a special symbol lands on enough reels during the free spins, it expands to fill each of those reels. That is the whole engine of the feature.

We watched it work. With eight spins still to go, the 10 expanded across four of the five reels and the spin paid 800.00 on a 100.00 stake – 8x from a low-paying card rank, which shows why a second special symbol matters so much.

Why Two Symbols Matter

In a standard book slot the free spins stand or fall on a single draw: pick a card rank and the round can be flat, pick the top symbol and it can be huge. Doubling the special symbols smooths that out.

With two symbols chasing expansions, the round has twice as many ways to catch fire. The trade-off is that the special symbols are likely to include at least one low-value rank, so the typical round lands in the middle rather than at the extremes.

The expansion also shows how little the base-game symbol values matter once the feature starts. A 10 that pays almost nothing as a normal line becomes a full-screen payer when it expands across four reels.

Who Should Play It

Book of Zulu suits players who like the book format but want a little more movement in the free spins. The medium-high volatility and the 2,500x ceiling are moderate for the genre, and the double expanding symbols make the feature less of an all-or-nothing draw.

The reservations are the price of the guaranteed-book option, which should be weighed carefully, and a base game that mostly pays small amounts between features. The savanna setting is a welcome change from yet another pyramid.
