How we rate games

Every slot is scored on the same four criteria, using the game's published data: RTP (40%), maximum win potential (25%), bonus features described in our review (30%) and how recent the release is (5%). Our editors can adjust a score after playing the game. Missing data counts as neutral. The score reflects the game's numbers and features, not your chances of winning; slots are games of chance, so please play responsibly.

Dragon Harmony Overview

Dragon Harmony is a Chinese-themed slot from Rival Gaming, released on 15 January 2024, just ahead of the Year of the Dragon. It plays on 5 reels and 4 rows with 1,024 ways to win, and its main feature is a hold-and-respin bonus called Lock & Load. SlotCatalog lists a 94.9% RTP and low volatility; no maximum win is published. Bets run from 0.40 to 40 per spin.

1,024 Ways on a Palace Grid

With 1,024 ways there are no paylines to follow: matching symbols pay when they appear on adjacent reels from the left, in any row. The reels sit inside a golden palace frame, with cherry blossom, paper lanterns and a pagoda in the background. The four rows give the grid a tall look, and stacked symbols are common – in one of our spins, a column of green toad statues covered most of the first reels.

The Symbols

Every symbol in Dragon Harmony belongs to the theme; there are no card royals at all. The reels carry:

  • the Emperor in his crown and the Princess,
  • a red dragon head, a phoenix and a white crane,
  • golden guardian lions, a golden koi fish, a laughing Buddha and a golden endless knot,
  • jade toad statues and small green frogs,
  • and red envelopes, the traditional gift for the Lunar New Year, which lead into the bonus.

What Our Base Game Showed

We played at a bet of 24.00. The base-game wins in our screenshots were modest, as you would expect from a low-volatility game: 10.80 from a row of guardian lions (0.45x), a line win of 14.40 from the toads (0.6x), and 37.80 (1.6x) from a spin with several winning ways across the first four reels. In the upper-right corner a counter read 17 OF 25; the screenshots do not show what happens when it fills.

Lock & Load Re-Spins

The bonus opens with a panel: “Congratulations – you won Lock & Load re-spins!” The grid is then cleared and the game switches to a new layout, with a SPINS counter and a TOTAL box on the left and a red dragon on the right.

Red envelopes land and lock in place. Each one opens to reveal a cash value – in our round we saw 1.00, 3.00, 5.40 and 13.20 early on. According to Rival's description, the round gives 3 re-spins, and every new prize resets the counter, so the round keeps going as long as the grid keeps filling. Some tiles carry special characters instead of plain values: the Princess and a golden Emperor tile, which in our round showed a much bigger figure than the envelopes around it.

Our Bought Round

Dragon Harmony has a bonus buy, shown as “Unlock the Dragon's Fortune”. At our 24.00 bet it cost 408.00 – 17x the bet. The balance confirms the purchase: 1,829.60 before, 1,421.60 after.

Midway through, the TOTAL read 26.40 with the counter back at 3. By the end almost the whole grid was full: plain values between 3.60 and 7.80, and the golden Emperor tile showing 603.00. With the counter at 0, the TOTAL box read 686.40 – 28.6x the bet, and about 1.7 times what the buy had cost. Almost all of it came from that single Emperor tile.

The Controls and the Buy Button

The interface is simple. Balance, bet and win are shown in three gold panels along the bottom, the spin button and autoplay sit on the right, and in the base game a red Bonus Buy button waits on the left side of the reels. Pressing it opens the “Unlock the Dragon's Fortune” window, where the bet can be changed with plus and minus buttons before confirming – at our 24.00 bet the price was 17 times the stake. During Lock & Load the buy button disappears and the SPINS and TOTAL boxes take its place.

Graphics and Sound

Dragon Harmony is one of Rival's better-looking releases. The symbols are rendered as detailed gold, jade and red figurines, the frame is heavy with carved gold, and the Lock & Load mode swaps the symbols for bright red envelopes that flip over to reveal their prizes. The Lock & Load logo sits in the lower-right corner throughout the game.

  • RTP: 94.9% (SlotCatalog)

  • Bonus buy: 17x the bet
  • Best result in our session: 686.40, or 28.6x, from the bought Lock & Load round

More From Rival

Rival Gaming covers a wide range of themes. Fairytale Fortunes: Jack and the Giants takes the studio into a storybook setting with a growing grid in its free spins.

Who It Is For

Dragon Harmony suits players who want a calm, good-looking slot with a clear bonus to aim for. The base game pays small and often, the Lock & Load round is easy to follow, and the 17x buy is cheap by modern standards. Keep in mind the 94.9% RTP listed by SlotCatalog, which is below the current market average.
