Mutagenes Overview

Mutagenes is a laboratory-themed slot from the studio Peter and Sons, released through Yggdrasil’s platform – our partner casinos list it under Yggdrasil. Peter and Sons is one of the independent studios in Yggdrasil’s YG Masters programme, which is why the game runs on Yggdrasil’s demo servers. It came out exclusively on 11 August 2024 and went on wide release on 21 August. It plays on 6 reels and 4 rows with 4,096 ways to win.

The published figures are an RTP of 96.3%, high volatility and a maximum win of 12,000x the bet. SlotCatalog notes an RTP range, so the version a casino runs may differ. Bets run from 0.10 to 50.

Inside the Lab

The reels sit in a mad scientist’s laboratory, between two glass tanks holding pickled creatures. Above the left tank a glowing orb shows the current multiplier, and above the right one a second orb counts the remaining free spins. The high symbols are the lab’s inmates and equipment: a red box-headed monster, a bandaged purple monster, a brain in a jar, a potion bottle, a green hand and a syringe. The low symbols are card suits drawn as coloured gems.

All Ways Wins

Mutagenes uses All Ways: there are no fixed lines, symbols just need to land on adjacent reels from the left, and wins per way are calculated from the longest combination. With six reels of four rows that gives 4,096 ways on every spin.

Reading the Screen

The layout puts everything you need around the grid. The balance, the last win and the bet sit in the bottom bar, with the spin and turbo buttons on the right. The buy button with a shopping cart icon and the Golden Bet button sit in the top corners, next to the Mutagenes logo. During the free spins the two orbs take over: the left one shows the multiplier, the right one the spins that remain.

The paytable has seven pages, and the last one explains the All Ways system with two small diagrams – one winning pattern with symbols on adjacent reels, and one losing pattern where a reel is skipped.

The Paytable

At a €50 bet the paytable shows the red monster at €200 for six, €125 for five, €60 for four and €20 for three. The purple monster pays €150, €75, €50 and €15, the brain and the potion €45, €30, €25 and €15, and the hand and the syringe €40, €25, €20 and €10.

Six red monsters on one way are therefore worth just 4x the bet. The 12,000x ceiling cannot come from a single way – it depends on many ways at once and on the multiplier.

The Multiplier

The multiplier orb is the engine of the game. In one base-game capture it stood at x2 while four ways of red monsters paid 80.00. In the free spins the orb climbed step by step, and we saw it at x2, x3 and x4 in the same round.

Free Spins

The free spins intro sums the feature up in one line: “Increasing multiplier, expanding wilds, infection feature!” The multiplier keeps growing during the round, wilds expand to cover a reel, and the infection feature appears as small panels at the lower left, each showing one gem symbol with an arrow to another symbol. Our reading is that the first symbol is converted into the second, so more of the board pays together.

Our captures show the effect. At x2 with 5 spins left, a spin across eight ways paid 40.00. At x3 with 6 spins left, eight ways of monsters paid 320.00, with two infection panels active. At x4 another spin paid 320.00 and took the round to €400.

How the Round Builds

The free spins round follows a clear pattern. Early on, with a low multiplier, even eight ways of a mid symbol pay only a small amount, like the 40.00 we saw at x2. As the multiplier grows, the same kind of spin becomes much more valuable: at x3 and x4, eight ways of monsters returned 320.00 each. The spin counter on the right can also go up during the round – we saw it at 7, 5 and 6 in different captures – so the round can last longer than it first appears.

That is why the high symbols matter less than the multiplier. A red monster pays only 4x the bet for six on a single way, but with dozens of ways and a multiplier of x3 or more, a single spin can return several times the stake.

Buy Feature and Golden Bet

Two buttons sit above the reels. The cart opens the buy menu: at €50 the Random Free Spins option cost €6,000, which is 120x the bet. The Golden Bet button is the game’s bonus bet – SlotCatalog lists a Bonus Bet among the features – but we did not play with it, so we cannot say what it changes.

We bought one round. The balance fell from €10,870 to €4,870, and the feature paid €6,715 – about 134x the bet and a little more than its price – leaving €11,585.

Our single bought round paid a little more than its 120x price, which is a good result but not a typical one: in a high-volatility game a bought round can just as easily return less than half its cost. The price is fixed at 120x for the random round, so the buy is best treated as a way to see the feature quickly rather than as a strategy.

The Numbers to Keep in Mind

A 96.3% return is right on the market average, and the high volatility is visible in the paytable: the base game pays little on its own, and the real results come from the multiplier and the free spins. The 12,000x maximum is a genuine high-volatility ceiling.
