Mystery Stones Overview

Mystery Stones is a Platipus video slot released on 30 May 2024. It runs on 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines, with cascading reels and an Avalanche Multiplier that grows with every consecutive win. Platipus rates the volatility as low, and SlotCatalog lists an RTP of 94.97% and a maximum win of x1,229.

The bonus is a round of 10 free spins in which the multiplier ladder climbs to x15, and a Buy Feature gives direct access to it. The free demo on the left is Platipus’s own and needs no registration.

Carved Masks of an Ancient Temple

The reels are framed by carved stone pillars, with glowing gold light around the edges and the title in bright orange letters on top. The setting draws on Aztec and Maya art, and every symbol is a carved stone tile.

The four premium symbols are masks: a red mask, a golden one, a green one and a blue one with a feathered crest. The lower symbols are three terracotta tiles with carved glyphs and profile heads. The scatter is a green-lit step pyramid with the word SCATTER on it.

Platipus frames the story as a hunt for hidden gemstones with magical power, lost in an ancient world that has puzzled historians for centuries. On the reels this becomes a wall of carved masks and glyph tiles, each set in a stone frame. The masks are colour-coded, which makes the value of a line easy to read at a glance: the brighter and warmer the mask, the higher it pays.

Paylines and Paytable

All wins pay left to right on the 20 lines, starting from the leftmost reel, and only the highest win per line is paid. Line wins are multiplied by the bet per line. The red mask is the top symbol: 2,500x the line bet for five, 250x for four and 50x for three. With 20 lines, five red masks are worth 125 times the total bet.

The golden mask pays 1,000x, 100x and 20x, the green mask 500x, 50x and 15x, and the blue mask 200x, 25x and 10x the line bet. The three glyph tiles pay from 100x down to 50x for five, and 3x to 5x for three. The gap between the masks and the low tiles is large, which is typical of a low-volatility game built around frequent small wins.

Cascades and the Avalanche Multiplier

After each win the winning symbols disappear and new ones fall into their place. If another win forms, the Avalanche Multiplier steps up. The ladder above the first reels shows the base-game values: x1, x2, x3 and x5. Each win after the first in the same spin gets the next multiplier, so a chain of four wins or more reaches x5.

In our session a chain at x5 produced a 518 win on a 40 bet – almost 13x the stake – from ordinary glyph and mask symbols. Wins of 150 and 214 landed with the ladder still at x1.

How a Spin Plays Out

A typical winning spin in Mystery Stones is a short chain. The first win is paid at x1, the symbols explode, and the tiles above slide down. If the new tiles complete another line, that win is paid at x2, the next one at x3 and every further one at x5. When no new win forms, the spin ends and the ladder resets to x1 for the next round.

Because the multiplier only applies to wins after the first, a single big line is worth the same as always, but a long run of small wins can add up quickly. The ladder above the first reels lights up the current step, so it is always clear how far a chain has gone. In our 518 win the x5 box was lit, meaning the chain had passed three wins.

Free Spins

Land three scatters on reels 1, 2 and 3 and you get 10 free spins. Three more scatters during the round add another 10 spins. The main difference from the base game is the multiplier ladder: in the free spins it runs x3, x6, x9 and x15, so even the first cascade win is tripled.

The scatters also pay on their own, and they can land again during the round to add the second batch of ten spins. Because the ladder starts at x3 instead of x1, the free spins are where the paytable really comes alive: a cascade that would pay x1, x2 and x3 in the base game pays x3, x6 and x9 here.

In one of our free spins a scatter win of 90 lifted the round total to 108, with seven spins still to play.

Buy Feature

The Feature Buy button to the right of the reels opens the free spins directly. At a 40 total bet the price was 1,600, which is 40x the bet. For a low-volatility slot with an x1,229 cap, that is a relatively cheap entry to the bonus.

What the Cap Means

The x1,229 maximum win explains a lot about the game’s balance. At a 40 bet the line bet is 2, so five red masks pay 5,000 – about 125x the stake – at x1. The same five masks at x15 in the free spins would be worth far more than the cap, so the biggest possible wins are limited to 1,229 times the bet. In practice, the best results come from long free-spin chains of mid-value masks rather than a single perfect line.

Buying skips the wait for three scatters and goes straight to the free spins with their x3 to x15 ladder. At the 40x rate we saw, the buy would cost 8 at the minimum stake of 0.20 and 800 at the maximum of 20. Before buying, it is worth trying a few rounds in the demo to see how often the free spins reach the higher steps of the ladder.

RTP, Bets and Maximum Win

SlotCatalog lists the RTP at 94.97%, which is below the usual 96% benchmark. The maximum win is x1,229, and bets range from 0.20 to 20. Platipus itself describes the volatility as low, which fits the flat base paytable and the modest top prize.

Desktop and Mobile

Mystery Stones is an HTML5 game and runs in any modern browser on desktop and mobile. Balance, the 20-line indicator and total bet sit along the bottom bar, with the spin and turbo buttons on the right.

Our Verdict

Mystery Stones is a compact, easy-going cascade slot. The Avalanche Multiplier gives the base game a little momentum, and the free spins raise the ladder to x15, which is where the bigger wins come from. The 94.97% RTP and the x1,229 cap mean it is not a slot for big chasers, but its low volatility and cheap 40x buy suit players who prefer steady play. The free demo is the easiest way to see the multiplier chains in action.
